Early Life
Hubert Hines “Hubey” Winstead was born in Albany, Texas on September 13, 1919. He was born to 31 year old Ruben Hines Winstead (July 22, 1888-August 24, 1977), and 39 year old Nellie “Nettie” Rachel Vinzant (December 3, 1880-July 23, 1942).
According to the 1930 Census, Hubert lived on a family farm, and at the age of ten, had attended school. He attended and graduated Brandon High School, and then went to college at the University of Mississippi. While he was at the University of Mississippi, he ran the mile and two mile for the college track team. He then attended Georgia Tech. By 1940, Hubert and his immediate family lived in Brandon, MS. He had undergone two years of college education and worked as a self employed carpenter, making $245 annually.
Hubert, 23, married Annie Ruth Wright, 22, on June 2, 1942, in Norfolk, Virginia. The wedding rites were performed in the chapel of the United States Naval Air Station with friends and family. Annie Ruth Wright wore a navy blue dress, and following the ceremony, a dinner dance was held at the local Monticello Hotel. The two had no known children.
